Harking back to the heydey of Studio 54, the hairstyles showcased on the Fall 2013 runways were big, bouncy, and made you look twice. Marc by Marc Jacobs’s show sent huge, teased curls down the catwalk, and Diane von Furstenberg accented her colorful collection with polished “hippie-hair” in loose waves. The dos were different, yet both combined the breezy feel of the 1970s with a modern eye for fashion. Hairstylist
Long, flowing locks stemming from a center part were common during the 1970s because they were effortless and easy to maintain. Lauren recreates this look by quickly blow-drying our model Christie’s dry hair, leaving in some of its natural wave.
After smoothing down flyaways with a dime-size amount of pomade, Lauren drapes a “Nicole Richie-esque” hairpiece on Christie’s head. This particular jewelry piece is from Icing, and perfectly lines up with Christie’s center part along her forehead.
DRAMATIC 1970s-INSPIRED HAIR
Inspired by the big, fluffy curls at Marc Jacobs’s and Bottega Veneta’s Fall 2013 shows, Lauren curls Christie’s hair in a uniform direction using a large-barrel curling iron. Then, with hair putty spread between her hands, she shakes out the cooled curls and back-combs the hair to add more volume and texture. She recommends finishing with a deep side part and decorative hairpins, which make the look “more dramatic and contrasting.”
